Hopeful

Well, had gone up to the barn yesterday because the Vet was coming to check out Fantasy. She seems to be responding to the one antibiotic and moving better than she had been before, which is good. And she likes the food with the extra high fat in it so that would be used to help get her weight back up again and so that it will level out the plane on her back so she doesn't look so bad.

Vet was sort of happy with the tissue of the tear, as it was pink and didn't show any sort of decaying or anything like that. She wasn't quite happy about being able to get in as easy to get a uterine swab but it's the nature of the beast and I'll find out the results on Monday or Tuesday.

I've been stressed for the past week, week and a half when they first told me she was limpy and dropping weight like crazy, which kind of kills the creative bug to keeping myself distracted until the vet had gotten there.

A little background: Fantasy is an Off-track TB race horse. She won about 6-7 races while she was there. I don't know the circumstances but the owner gave her to a broodmare farm then. This farm was VERY hands off with it's horses. It was a business to them. Get the mares pregnant and when they drop the babies, scoop up the babies and sell them off. She had gotten pregnant and dropped the foal. During the birth, the foal might have caught a hoof as she was coming out or there might have been some difficulty. Again, I don't know the full details of it all. There was a vaginal tear and IF they had a barn where they watched teh mares when they were showing signs of giving birth and assisting, she could have been sewn up right at the moment or something could have been done that she didn't tear. But it was only three days after the fact that it was noticed and by then, well, it's an expensive surgery and what's one mare to them. She no longer had a use as she coudn't birth babies anymore. They were going to shoot her because she was wild from not having much human contact. The woman I got her from had been there to pick up a mare who had been struck by lightning, or was close to a lightning strike, and was blinded. She worked with Fantasy so that she didn't wig out from humans being around her.

Either way, to get the tear fix, would be about six grand, last I was told when I talked to a vet, but even then, it is risky because of the fact that the muscles there are always moving because of bowel movements/peeing (TMI, I know). so even if she had the surgery, and it would probably be internal to be the most effective, it might not keep/she might not survive it.

The first time this one vet told me about this, he had me in tears because he was making it sound like I was an awful person for not getting this done and how this was hurting her and if I couldn't get it done, she was going to do poorly. I've had her about 6 years now (she is 16) and there are some flare ups where she might get a minor infection but giving her penicillan/antibotics helps push it back.

I would get it done, if I could, but I don't exactly have the kind of cash without winning a lotto jackpot to have it done so I need to do other preventative measures.

(And that vet can suck it. He was being a jerk.)
